Yesterday I did a coaching session with a client of mine who is also a dear friend. He described himself as feeling really connected to his higher self and to God, yet somehow disconnected from life. As we explored more deeply we came across a young part of him that felt that he was undeserving of love, unable to practise self care, self love.
Which got me thinking of that line from the Upanishads (in my case via my old battered copy of Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert!) “God dwells within you, as you”. God dwells within you. As you. You are God. So you must be able to love yourself if you are to claim to love God, for they are one and the same. There is no separation between us and God. So for me, the journey to enlightenment starts with self love (or perhaps with self like which is what another client feels able to work on). For each time we are loving to our selves, each time we rest when we need rest, say no when we mean no, ask when we need help we are not only helping ourselves, we are helping the whole. We are just one cell in this vast universe, yet that cell is indivisible from the whole. Only once we are able to love ourselves are we able to truly offer ourselves to be of service, to truly love another.
So practice self care. Listen to your body – allow it’s aches and pains to be your messengers. Follow your heart. Notice when you hear a NO deep in your gut, deep in your belly. Do what you love – sing, dance, put the footie on – allow yourself JOY. For we are God’s hands and feet. We are the body of God. When we feel joy, God experiences it through us. When we are replete with self love we are able to give freely without expecting or needing anything in return. We are able to truly be of service, to be beings of light, beings of LOVE.
